Sonnet to Sailing Friends
We meet again with talk of books and rhymes,
And share such wistful tales of earlier years,
We speak of waning pow’rs from former times
With sighs and smiles concealing current fears.
Yet soon the harbour’s mouth recedes from view,
With leaps and spurts our craft confronts the swell,
The wind and spray transforms our happy crew
And wipes away all thoughts of things to tell.
We are at one with water, wind and world,
Within a unique presence fills the void
Twixt sea and sky; one’s naked Self unfurled
To touch another’s Self by grace alloyed.
No greater cure a tired spirit mends,
Than cruise or sail the seas with cherished friends.
